`Dead Mount Death Play is a dark fantasy manga series that follows the adventures of a mysterious necromancer who is reborn in the body of a young boy in present-day Tokyo. The necromancer, who calls himself Polka, was once the most feared and respected practitioner of the forbidden art of raising the dead. He was assassinated by an unknown enemy in his own world, but instead of dying, he found himself in a new world where magic and supernatural phenomena are commonplace. Polka soon realizes that he is not the only one who has crossed over from another world, and that there are many forces that are after his power and secrets. He teams up with a girl named Riko, who has a special ability to see the souls of the dead, and a shady organization called the Undertakers, who deal with the problems caused by the undead. Together, they face various threats and challenges, such as rogue necromancers, cults, terrorists, and even gods. The manga series is written by Ryohgo Narita, the creator of popular works such as Durarara!! and Baccano!, and illustrated by Shinta Fujimoto, who previously worked on Fire Punch. It has been serialized in Square Enix’s online magazine Gangan Online since October 2017 and has been collected in seven tankōbon volumes as of December 2021. An anime adaptation by studio Bones, known for their high-quality animation and action scenes, is scheduled to premiere in April 2024.
